A - This little upturn of the ribbon is etched deeper than the part above it. it
will print higher.
B- Above A has some texture etched into it. Etching process was stopped so
that it would be higher than the part of the ribbon that folds over it. It will print
lower - behind - the part folded over it.
C - The backmost part of the ribbon on the plate is etched deeper than the rest, so
when printed it will be the frontmost part of the ribbon on the paper - more embossed
than the other sections. It will appear to be on top, and somewhat floating away from
the wreath. There is a little texture etched into this portion that is
supposed to give it a more 3D look. (growl - gerrrrrr, XX@#!!*XX! - hard to ink it
just right -- printmakers swear a lot)
D - The wreath is etched in various degrees. Many of the holly leaves and "berries" are etched deeper than the rest of
the wreath. But on this scanned image they seem to look raised. Then again, they appear
incised. I tried various things, but could not get the scanned image to look true to the original object - all the
time. Definately tricks of light and shadow at work here. This happens a lot with the
images of Mars. And that is why image enhancement is a double edged sword.
E - The edges of the plate are beveled and smoothed. This step is done on almost all
metal plates so that during the printing process the sharp edges of the plate will
not damage the paper. A smooth bevel also makes for a much cleaner print job, and
allows the paper to fold nicely over the plate, which will leave the entire print set back
a little into the paper - kind of like producing
a built-in frame or matt.
F - The rest of the plate - background - is the highest part of the plate.
Up =s down, so it will print lower than most of the image. It will be recessed into the
paper, and the outer, unprinted, portions of the paper will be raised.
